Daveon Swan
Daveon Swan is community empowerment multihyphenate with a background in theology, education, and social justice advocacy in Los Angeles, California. After completing his Bachelor of Arts in Theology with a minor in African American Studies at Loyola Marymount University, Professor Swan continued his education by completing a Master of Science in Church Management from Villanova University School of Business. His passion for community work led him to become a Fellow of the Social Justice Institute at Boston University School of Theology studying race, gender, and poverty and Fellow of the BIPOC Leadership Collective of the Place Based Justice Network. It was there that he decided to pursue his doctoral degree to position himself to shape policy and advocate for education reform. Daveon is currently a candidate for the Doctor of Education at the University of New England. Swan’s advocacy work led him to work in California Assembly District 52 as Community Faith Based Liaison, as well as with the Gang Reduction and Youth Development program with the Office of the Mayor of Los Angeles. Daveon has led programs in a directorate capacity addressing: Gang Reduction and Youth Development, Substance Abuse Prevention, Workforce Development, locating permanent housing for those experiencing homelessness, scholarship programs for BIPOC males, community organizing and reentry, as well as GED preparation. Wanting to stay true to his theological background Daveon completed the Certificate of Theology and Ministry at Princeton Theological Seminary in addition to becoming a licensed and ordained minister. This unique blend of education and experience has led Daveon to become an Adjunct Professor teaching Math, Science, English, and Social Studies for city and county funded grant programs, and in the Los Angeles Community College District. Additionally, Swan’s teaching course load has included Ethnic Studies at Pasadena City College, and Community Psychology and Sociology at Pacific Oaks College. In his current role, Daveon serves as the Associate Director for Community Based Learning at Loyola Marymount University.
