Xiantong (Abby) Liu, MFT Trainee
Languages Spoken: English & Mandarin
Hi, I’m Abby, a therapist trainee currently working toward my graduate degree in School and Mental Health Counseling at the University of Pennsylvania. Before this, I earned a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Franklin & Marshall College and a Master’s degree in Communication from Northwestern University.
My interdisciplinary background helps me understand how people think, feel, and connect with each other. I’m particularly interested in how we communicate, relate, and make sense of our experiences in different relationships and cultural contexts. Growing up as an Asian, I pay close attention to how culture, family, identity, and life experiences shape the stories we carry about ourselves. I’m here to listen and understand your story, including how your experiences and the world around you have influenced who you are today.
I know how much our past and environment can shape us. I also believe that being truly heard, feeling supported, and gaining awareness of ourselves can spark real and meaningful change. Together, we might use techniques like acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), dialectical-behavioral therapy (DBT), and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to better understand your thoughts and emotions, explore different choices, and develop skills that build confidence, self-compassion, and a stronger sense of agency.
I see therapy as a collaborative process, where we explore emotions, patterns, and challenges together, at a pace that feels comfortable and sustainable.
