Erik Davis, Doctoral Therapist
Languages Spoken: English
Hello, my name is Erik Davis, and I am a Doctoral Intern earning my Psy. D. in Applied Clinical Psychology from the Chicago School, Los Angeles campus. Growing up in Los Angeles, I have witnessed the challenges experienced by marginalized people in a biased and inequitable justice system. Lenny Bruce jokingly said, “In the halls of justice the only justice is in the halls.”
Unfortunately, that still too often rings true which is why I dedicated the second half of my life to helping people overcome limited access to justice by becoming a licensed attorney in the state of California.
I soon realized that people with mental health issues had some of the most severe disadvantages in courts because of a lack of understanding of the mental health and field and mental health issues by judges and attorneys alike. I am here on a journey to be able to provide mental health services to all individuals but with a specialized lens for those that might have had negative involvement in the justice system such as with criminal cases, family law cases and immigrant trauma. Yes, involvement in the legal system can be traumatic and my goal is to be able to provide effective services for those affected by the process.
I have a passion for treating people from all levels of society and who originated from all corners of the earth. I consider myself a devout world traveler which I employ as a self-care method. It has also helped me understand some of the challenges people face when immigrating to the United States. As a practitioner in the immigration court, I have a unique understating of the challenges and effects immigration court has on people.
I have provided mental health services to clients with a wide spectrum of issues ranging from mild impairments all the way to more severe. I employ a holistic approach to treatment and believe that people are inherently good, and capable of free will. When supported in therapy with an unconditional positive regard, people have an increased chance to self-actualize. I also believe that mental health issues can be improved by eliminating faulty thinking and I approach therapy with his concept in mind. There will also be plenty of Star Wars references and talk because I am a fanatic.
I would like my clients to know that “It’s ok not to be ok” and with the safe space I will provide, people can discuss their issues, and we will work together to find effective solutions that will lead to more productive and healthy lives.
